"My Signature Piece" 2009 |
In February 2006, Gerald Peters Gallery, Dallas produced an introductory exhibition of steel sculpture by George Tobolowsky. Citing artists such as Louise Nevelson and David Smith as inspirations to his work, Tobolowsky constructs his creations by transforming steel into a visual memory that reflects his business experiences of the past several decades. A savvy executive who has analyzed humanity's trials and tribulations in the legal and business world, Tobolowsky channels a solid understanding of metallurgy into whimsical and curvilinear forms. Producing sculptures from indoor table-top pieces to monumental outdoor works using "found" metals that incorporates some of the metals original colors and forms. The striking juxtaposition between the brawn of his medium and the fluidity of his compositions harmonize with remarkable success.
A native of Dallas, Texas, George Tobolowsky earned his business degree and law degree from Southern Methodist University in the early 70s. A minor in sculpture sparked a long standing relationship with another Texas sculptor, the venerable James Surls. Tobolowsky has sustained an active involvement in the arts, as board member of esteemed organizations including the Meadows School of the Arts at SMU and the Library of Congress. Tobolowsky has been invited to participate in several museum shows and exhibitions over the years and his work is in many public and private collections. The artist lives in Dallas and works in Mountain Springs, Texas.
"What an impressive body of work! Dazzling compositions, rhythm, structure and infinite grace with bold gestures and irresistible tactility. I am deeply impressed by the growing maturity of your work, George. Congratulations! I admire your energy and vision. Keep me posted. All my best"
"Since that revelatory debut in 2006, Tobolowsky has continued to hone his craft, creating works of greater compositional complexity, challenging engineering, textural variation, and conceptual sophistication. The works...made between 2008 and 2010, show the artist continuing the incredible transformation of discarded machine parts, industrial production errors, and miscellaneous hunks of steel salvaged from the scrap heaps and fabrication plants of Dallas into powerful, whimsical, engaging works of art. Tobolowsky's abstract steel assemblages derive from the artist's life and work experience and speak of the joys, frustrations, humorous moments, conflicts, and triumphs that constitute our shared human experience at the beginning of the 21st century."
